We set out to be a showcase for eco-friendly homes in Belize and around the world. To reach that vision, we drafted guidelines that will get us there.

Our Eco Construction Workbook

Upon purchase of a lot, we provide an Eco Construction Workbook. It sets out the guidelines for construction here at Better in Belize and sets the tone of our development process.

To serve as a role model for future projects in Belize, the developer of Better in Belize facilitated the establishment of an Ecological Advisory Board to create design, construction and living guidelines for the community. The workbook helps landowners adopt the principles of ecological sustainability in the design of their living and work spaces.

Why Eco-Housing?

The construction sector has been, and continues to be, a major source of environmental degradation, and because buildings last for generations, so do their impacts. Eco-housing is a flexible, bottom-up approach that can reverse these trends. It merges traditional and modern-day architectural practices, many of which people have used for centuries to stay comfortable in their surroundings.

Key Areas of Our Guidelines

  • Site selection
  • Material selection
  • Energy performance
  • Water management
  • Waste management

The guidelines are not rigid. Each home should blend into the bio-climatic features and socio-cultural character of its site.

Building Lightly on the Land

Our goal is to create minimum disturbance to the existing site and to minimize the need for natural resources, energy and water by working with the site’s natural features. A more ambitious target is to enhance the site and even become net producers of energy and water, while staying economically efficient.

Better in Belize and other visionary eco-developments will and must stop this impact on the earth. Take this document as a trail into this new land; let us together create the future.
